This exhibition focuses on two pioneering women artists in Philippine modern art. Classmates in the fine-arts program of the University of the Philippines before the Pacific War, Anita Magsaysay-Ho and Nena Saguil pursued their practice with remarkable spirit in spite of the constraints of an art world and a society that was dominated by masters and patriarchs. Of specific interest of this exhibition are the media through which the artists expressed their distinct sensibility: egg tempera for Magsaysay-Ho and works on paper for Saguil. Through a close reading of the said materials, their inspiration gains both luminosity and depth as it engages with the conditions of the social and cultural context.
