Preserving and Exhibiting Volcanic Disasters

Toya Caldera and Usu Volcano UNESCO Global Geopark

Mt. Usu was the site of a huge volcanic eruption in 2000, which caused extensive damage to the surrounding area. But thanks to a prompt evacuation order, issued on the basis of various observations, and the cooperation of local residents, there was miraculously no loss of human life. Toya Caldera and Usu Volcano UNESCO Global Geopark strive to preserve and “exhibit” things exactly as they were following a volcanic eruption. The realistic displays leave the viewer with a strong impression about the state of the earth, continually changing over a long period of time, and social activities in which people learn to live together with volcanoes.
