JANE LEE

At the forefront of Singapore’s contemporary art scene, Jane Lee (b.1963) continues to break barriers through her art. Though trained in classical figurative painting, she shifted to abstraction to “find” her own voice in artmaking. Operating in a post-colonial Southeast Asian context, Lee navigates through Western painting practices and reexamines its significance in creating cultural art. As much of Lee’s works are an exploration of the medium, she is known to investigate the materiality of paint, and her works are characterized by its highly tactile and varied surfaces as she uses the paint to create both two-dimensional and three-dimensional textures. Pushing the boundaries of the medium, Lee attempts to break down cultural barriers in the era of globalization, and affirms the universality of contemporary art.

Jane Lee has participated in numerous art fairs and exhibitions across the globe. Notable exhibitions include Jane Lee: Red States, a critically acclaimed solo exhibition organized by Sundaram Tagore Gallery at the Hong Kong Arts Centre in 2018; Meld, a solo Sundaram Tagore Gallery presentation at Art Basel in 2017; and two residencies at STPI in Singapore.
