Banksy
Mona Lisa Bazooka
Soho, London
2007

The mural was first seen in Soho district of West London.

Banksy takes the passive and graceful Mona Lisa of Da Vinci and contrasts it to the large and hostile military weapon she carries. The mysterious smile of the Mona Lisa then takes on a different meaning as it becomes a menacing image of remorseless violence.

The passiveness of the Mona Lisa’s smile becomes a metaphor to people’s detachment and indifference to the real wars happening in other parts of the world.
